History of Gandhi Samaj of Chicago

Gandhi samaj of Chicago's history goes back to 1970 when people from Modh Gandhi community used to meet and greet in Chicago, home away from home. Mr. Thakorbhai, Neelaben Gandhiand Bhaskarbhai, Padamben Baman who were well settled for a long time in Chicago, used to arrange dinner get together for Dineshbhai and Navinbhai.

As community started to grow, on November 15, 1983 it was decided to arrange a Diwali-Christmas celebration for everyone. There were 52 families at that time totalling 200 members. During that occassion it was decided to form an organization and a committee. This was inspired by Mr. Babubhai Bharucha and Mr. Jayantibhai Gheewala. Total 22 people participated in the first committee of "Shree Modh Vanik Samaj" (aka. SMVS)

First meeting of SMVS was held on 17 December, 1983 where it was decided to declare objectives of SMVS as being for the progress of community, service of the samaj and committment to social, charity work. Along with that it was decided to make SMVS work for education of community and overall goodwill of it's members. Per family membership was decided at $10.

Mr. Dineshbhai R Gandhi was the first President, Mr. Thakorbhai D Gandhi was Vice President, Mr. Navinbhai G Gandhi was the Secratary and Mr. Bhaskarbhai I Baman was the Treasurer.

In 2000, SMVS was renamed to "Gandhi Samaj of Chicagp (GSC)" and for last 30 years it has become a strong community of over 600 members spread throughout Chicagoland area. This would not have been possible without hard work of it's members and committee.
